Education system in Italy


Education system in Italy starts from 1859 when educational responsibilities taken by Legge Casati for Italian state and then in 1861 Italian unification took place. The next important law taken by Legge Gentile, Italian education system in 1923. At that time the compulsory age of education was raised to 14 years, and education was based on ladder system.

From 1962 to the present day the main system of Italian primary and secondary education is remained unchanged. No gaps between male and female and the new system is ‘nuovo ordinamento’. But this new system will be start through bologna process, and Italian education system switched from old system to the new system (old system: vecchio ordinamento, new system: nuovo ordinamento).

Now, In Italy the education is compulsory for the students from 6 to 16 years old and there are 5 stages of Education System of Italy.

Stage 1:     Kindergarten


Name:                                            Scuola dell’infanzia (nursery school)
Duration:                                       3 years (age: 3-6)

Stage 2: primary School

Name:                                             Scuola Primaria (primary School)
Duration:                                        5 years (age: 6-11)
Certificate awarded:                       Licenza di scoula elementare

Stage 3: Lower Secondary School

Name:                                         Scuola secondaria di primo grado (first garde secondary school)
Duration:                                    3 years (age: 11-16)
Certificate awarded:                   diploma di scuola secondaria di primo grado)

Stage 4: Upper Primary School

Name:                                    Scuola secondaria di secondo grado (second grade secondary school)
Duration:                                5 years (age: 14-19)
Certificate awarded:               1) diploma di liceo
                                                 2) diploma di istituto tecnico
                                                 3)diploma di istituto professionale

Name:                                        Formazione Professionale (Vocational education)
Duration:                                    3-5 years (age 14-17 or 14-19)
Certificate awarded:                   1) Qualifica Professionale (4 yaers)
                                                      2) Licenza professionale (5 years)

Stage 5: University

Name:                                      Laurea (Bachelo’s degree),
                                                 Diploma accademico di primo livello
Duration:                                 3 years


Name:                                     Laurea magistrale (Master’s degree),
                                                Diploma accademico di secondo livello

Duration:                                 2 years

Name:                                     Laurea magistrale a ciclo unico (Bachelor’s + Master’s degree)
Duration:                                5 years

Name:                                    Dottorato di ricerca (PhD)
                                               Diploma accademico di formazione alla ricerca
                                               Diploma di perfezionamento-PhD

Duration:                                3,4 or 5 years
