Famous Writers of European Literature


William Shakespeare (1564-1616):

William Shakespeare was an English poet and born on 26th April 1564 in England. He was not just poet but an playwright, and actor as well. He was greatest writer in English language that’s why he is known as England’s national poet and the “Bard of Avon”. He wrote many poems in which included narrative poems (Venus and Adonis, the rape of Lucerne, A lover’s Complaint) and other then narrative poems there are also “the phoenix and turtle”, “The passionate pilgrim” etc. Shakespeare died on 1616 in England.





Dante Alighieri (1265-1321):

Dante Alighieri was born 1265 Florence, Republic of Florence. He 
was Italian poet of the late middle ages. He done his most works 
on literature. In the middle ages, the most of his poetry was written
 in Latin and that was accessible for only educated audience. He was
 Italian but later on he also tried to write his poems in English as well.
 He was died on 14th September, 1321 and he was 56 year old.


              

Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616):

Miguel de Cervantes was born on 29th September, 1547 in Spain. He was Spanish writer who was regarded as a greatest writer and he mostly wrote his poems in Spanish language and he was also one of the world’s greatest novelists. He wrote many poems and novels but his major work “Don Quixote” considered to be the first modern novel in western literature. He spend 68 years of his life with success and died on22 April, 1616 in Madrid, Spain.







Thomas Moore (1779-1852):

Thomas Moore was born on 28th May, 1779 in Ireland. Thomas was an Irish poet, singer, songwriter and entertainer and lyricist as well. His best lyrics of “The Minstrel Boy” and “The Rose of Summer”. He wrote many poems and songs but his success started with “The meeting of the Waters”, “Believe Me, if all those Endearing young Charms. He died at the age of 72 on 25 February 1852.







Carl Michael Bellman (1740-1795):

Carl Michael Bellman was a Swedish poet who born on 4th February 1740 in Sweden. He was poet, songwriter, composer and performer as well. He was very famous Swedish poet. Carl Michael Bellman is a central figure in the Swedish song tradition and remains a powerful influence in Swedish music and also in literature. “Fredman’s songs” and “Fredman’s epistles” were his best collections of poems that changed into songs. Except that he wrote many more poems and he died on 11th February 1795 in Sweden.





Johan Ludvig Runeberg (1804-1877):

Johan Ludvig Runeberg was born on 5th February 1804 in Sweden. He was Finland Swedish lyricist and an epic poet. He was also known as the national poet of Finland and author of lyrics to Finnish National Anthem. He was married to his second cousin Fredrika Runeberg who also wrote poems and novels.  He died on 6th May, 1877 when he was 73 years old.




Adam Oehlenschlager (1779-1850):

Adam Oehlenschlager was born on 14th November, 1779 in Denmark. He was Danish and his father, a Schleswiger by birth and was an organist at that time. On the other hand his mother was partly German by extraction. He was a great poet and play writer as well. He wrote many famous poems and his poetry was used in different dramas and in theaters. He died in Denmark on 20th January, 1850 at the age of 70.





Joost van den Vondel (1587-1679):

Joost van den Vondel was born on 17th November 1587 in Netherlands. He was a great Dutch poet, writer and playwright. He was one of the greatest Dutch poet of 17th century. His epic play was “Joannes de Boetgezant in 1662 on the life of John the Baptist. He wrote more than 50 plays  in which The Passover or the Redemption of Israel from Egypt (1610), Jerusalem Destroyed (1620), Palamedes (1625), Hecuba (1626) were really famous. He died on 5th February, 1679 in Dutch Republic when he was 91 years old.



Johann Wolfgang Von Gerthe(1749-1832):

Johann Wolfgang Von Gerthe was born on 28th August, 1749. He was a German writer and statesman. Mostly he has done epic and lyric poetry in variety of meters and styles, prose and verse dramas, memoirs, an autobiography, literary and aesthetic criticism, and books on botany, anatomy and four novels. He was great poet of his era. He died on 22nd March, 1832 in Germany.  




Alberecht von Haller (1708-1777):

Alberecht von Haller was born on 16th October, 1708. He was a Swiss anatomist, physiologist, naturalist and a poet. He was very famous poet and teacher of his era. He wrote many books on botany, physiology, anatomy and agriculture etc. He died on 12th December, 1777 in Swiss Confederacy.
